about

Here is Tango Whiskyman, featuring a line up of Sheffield musicians who had performed live as Spoon (elsewhere on Sheffield Tape Archive) but here featured in the studio, accompanied by other guest musicians.

Chris Ellis - Vocals
Dave Edley - Guitar
Matt Colley - Bass
Steve Dinsdale - Drums
Anne Garner - Keyboards (Tracks 1-2)
Robin Markin - Keyboards (tracks 3-4)

"Unlike Spoon, this band did get as far as the studio, recording 2 tunes in September 1987 and another 2 in February 1988. At the time of the first recording (Night City/Steve Is..) Anne Garner was a permanent member of the band on Keyboard. She departed soon after for reasons long forgotten, but it seems we didn't put her off music altogether. Check out some of her incredible work since via Bandcamp.

A more song-oriented approach is evident here thanks to the presence of Chris Ellis on Vocals and a more danceable groove is the order of the day. The ridiculously titled `Steve Is Jaki Liebezeit' is of course a play on The Fall's `I Am Damo Suzuki'...a joke that stuck !

The latter two tracks (Ride/Black Cherry Jam) were recorded as a four piece with guest Keyboards by Extras legend Robin Markin who was kind enough to contribute to proceedings and offer us general encouragement. `Black Cherry Jam' is a remix of a song called `Black Cherry Baby'.

The recordings got us a gig at The Rock Garden in London, where the Tango story ended in June 1988 on a high note. It was a fine final gig, but Steve was already permanently relocated to London by this time and would shortly form Indie favourites Honey Smugglers with new musicians there. Dave and Matt joined Crispin Hunt in The Happening Men and Chris subsequently formed `This Machine Kills' ".

Many thanks to Steve Dinsdale for donating these recordings to STA.
