about

A good quality recording of a full gig by Spoon at The Hallamshire Hotel, Sheffield on 21st Dec 1986. This is one of two gigs by Spoon, the other (November '86) will be released on STA shortly.

Spoon comprised -
Dave Edley - guitar
Matt Colley - bass
Steve Dinsdale - drums, keyboards
Dave Camfield - keyboards

"Spoon came out of a spontaneous gig in April 1986 when Steve talked himself into the drum role the night before a `Battle Of The Bands' concert at the University Lower Refectory, with Dave E, Matt C and Dave C (ex-Hole In The Wall) going under the name `Terminal Mindf*ck' and also including Jon Pullin and Mick Flexible on Vocals. The core of this line-up decided to continue as Spoon as a homage to Can. Early gigs featured another vocalist called Nigel, but the band eventually became an instrumental only unit as it became clear that all they really wanted to do was make stuff up as they went along and that this was quite difficult to sing over unless you were Damo Suzuki.

Throughout the rest of 1986 they played the usual Sheffield haunts including a Dolebusters at the Poly and an afternoon gig on The Moor Bandstand, rehearsed intensely at the Hillsborough Barracks jamming hours and hours of material, and ground to a halt here at The Hallamshire just before Xmas finishing with an unlikely Blues and sloping off into the sunset. 6 months later the trio of Edley/Colley and Dinsdale returned with a slightly more song oriented project Tango Whiskeyman featuring Chris Ellis (Bride Wore Black, This Machine Kills) on Vocals which lasted until early 1988 when Dave and Matt were poached by Crispin Hunt for The Happening Men at about the same time Steve moved to London".

Kindly digitised and donated to STA by Steve Dinsdale.. many thanks!
